Physics Department

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

The department of physics launched its journey in 1958 as general subject and soon evolved into the leading centre in the university for advanced higher education and research in physics. The department was upgraded and extended in the year 1999 by initiating post-graduation under self-finance scheme.

The founder head of the department was Sh. C.P. Atrey. Dr. R.K. Goel, Dr. Saroj Sharma, Dr. Rohitashav, Dr. S.D. Sharma, Smt. Shobhna Sharma were the distinguished faculty of this department. Dr. R.K. Goel and Dr. S.D. Sharma have extensively contributed in research field while Smt. Shobhna Sharma was an arduous writer who wrote many books of competitive exams. In 2018, Head of department Dr. B.S. Yadav was conferred with ‘Saraswati Samman’ by the state government for his excellent contribution and devotion towards the research and higher education.

The department caters to over 240 students at undergraduate level and 30 students at postgraduate level every year. The department is equipped with laboratories, departmental library, computer lab and seminar hall. With a diverse student population, the department strives to deliver teaching in a meaningful manner and create an environment where students are able to discover their potentials. Besides ensuring the availability of prescribed books and supplementary reading material, the department motivates students to go through e-content available in various government sponsored platforms. In order to enrich learning experience of students, faculty members use best-in-line ICT facilities. The department ensures that internal assessment in the form of assignments, tests and quizzes is done in a manner which provides students the necessary push to excel in their coursework.

Academically it is pleasing to put on record that our students are continuously securing positions in the university merit list. Since the inception of post-graduation course in 1999, the students of the department have secured 7 times first positions and 9 times second and third positions in the university merit list. Every year many students qualify NET/GATE/JEST and other competitive examinations. Some students have also been selected in various reputed national and international universities and institutes for further studies.

A central research lab has been established for the research scholars to provide them interdisciplinary insight and facilities. The lab is incorporated with tools and instruments related to spectroscopy, thin films and biological studies. About 260 research papers have been published in national and international reputed journals and about 55 students have been conferred with Ph.D. in physics from the department. At present 10 students are pursuing their research work under the supervision of the faculty of physics. The department has organized various national and international conferences and seminars.

Since the environment in the department lays a strong emphasis on going beyond the bounds of formal prescribed coursework, an active and enthusiastic involvement of students in community building exercises is an important facet of the overall growth. The department has an active student society, Bose Physical Society, which organizes several activities for students including seminars, workshops, educational trips and cultural activities. This gives an opportunity to students to learn team work and to develop leadership qualities.
